Dhaka: Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Usman Hadi was among those youth of Bangladesh who expressed their views openly. Being associated with student movements, he was often seen on the streets. His identity among his supporters was that of a person who was not afraid to stand apart from the crowd and ask questions. His speeches were direct and clear, which is why many people felt connected to him.
On 13 December, the situation suddenly deteriorated during a demonstration in the Paltan area of Dhaka. Amidst the chaos, bullets were fired, and Sharif Usman Hadi was shot. The people present at the spot handled him and took him to the hospital without any delay. At that time no one had any idea that the matter would become so serious.
After initial treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, doctors described his condition as critical. After this the family decided to take him to Singapore for better treatment. For many days people kept praying for his recovery on social media. Supporters kept waiting for updates, but luck was not on their side, and the news of his death came during treatment.
As the news of Hadi's death spread, anger was clearly visible in Dhaka and other cities. At many places people came out on the streets and started demanding justice. The demonstrations turned violent in some areas, making the situation tense. Both fear and anger were seen among the common people.
The family decided that Sharif Usman Hadi would be buried near the mausoleum of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. A large number of people are expected to attend the funeral. In view of the crowd, the administration has increased security arrangements so that no untoward incident happens.
The interim government has expressed grief over the incident and assured an investigation. Officials say that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and action will be taken against whoever is found responsible. At the same time, Hadi's supporters say that concrete steps are needed, not just statements.
The death of Sharif Osman Hadi has become no longer just the news of one person's death. This incident has raised many questions regarding protest, security, and accountability in Bangladesh. People now want answers so that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
